Have you heard of White Day? It's a popular holiday in Asia (including Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan...all places where we have international boutiques!) White Day falls on March 14th, exactly one month after Valentine's Day.
For the countries that observe White Day, girls gift guys chocolate (or other sweets and confections) on Valentine's Day. Then on White Day, the guys gift girls a present as a way to return the thanks. Fun thing to note: it's expected that the present given by the guy be at least two to three more times in value. We won't argue with that :)
Checkers This holiday originated in Japan in 1978 and has since spread across Asia. We're even starting to see White Day become more popular in the US....if that means sweets and treats for everyone, we are onboard! Our official White Day cake at Lady M is the fabulous Checkers cake, a pretty striking creation that weaves together a tender checkerboard of vanilla and chocolate sponge cake. The whole cake is finished with whipped cream, and then enrobed in chocolate. It has proven to be a real show stopper when sliced open tableside.
Till next time, Lady M
P.S. Stay tuned for Black Day! This is a holiday that takes place in South Korea on April 14th. Single girls and guys who didn't receive gifts on Valentine's Day or White Day, gather with friends to eat jajangmyeon (a delicious Korean dish of noodles and a hearty sauce of black beans, pork belly, and onions. Lot of scallions and radishes to top!) This holiday is speckled with plenty of humor, as friends are expected to wear black, eat black/dark colored food and commiserate over the lack of romantic love, and more importantly, chocolates and sweets.
