Mimosa Cake for International Women's Day

March 01, 2019 7:48 pm
International Women's Day began in the early 20th century, and starting in 1946, the mimosa flower came to represent it. In Italy, men gifted mimosa bouquets to the ladies in their lives as a sweet sign of their love. Known as Festa della Donna, the tradition held strong, spread across the world, and still thrives today. The blossoms are beautiful and bright, with dainty spheres of yellow that hang delicately from fine stems: a fitting tribute.

This year, the holiday falls on Friday, March 8th, a day for everyone to honor and celebrate (though we aim to do this on all days) the women in our lives.
Mimosa
We don't grow mimosa flowers here at the Lady M headquarters, but we do make cakes. They're pretty special, if we may say. Every March, in honor of the holiday, we welcome our Mimosa cake back to all U.S. boutiques. This sunny yellow creation is modeled after the mimosa flower, with delicate cubes of our golden sponge cake forming a beautiful dome over the entire cake. Mimosa also happens to be the perfect cake for the month of March, that in-between time where we shift from winter into the hopeful inklings of spring. It's a sweet dream created of sponge cake and custard (we have more cake details in this post!), two classic and essential elements that form many of our cakes at Lady M.

In the coming days, we will celebrate several women in history who inspire us - some household names, some not. We believe they exemplify the theme of International Women's Day 2019: #BalanceforBetter. Often the first to achieve the pinnacle of success in their field, these women impacted the world in profound and meaningful ways. That's progress worth celebrating.

This holiday, we encourage you to show your gratitude to the women in your lives - partners, friends, and role models - in word and deed. And if you choose Mimosa as a token of appreciation, don't forget the flowers to match.

Till then,
Lady M
